Step 13: Link popularity (Very Important)

You also need to get as many people linking to your site as possible. Visit related sites and ask for a link to your site. There is a trend by the engines to increasingly use link popularity and traffic as an indicator of relevancy.

What this means is that the more people link to your page relative to your competitors pages, the more you will rank highly on the engines. Not only will getting many incoming links get you a better rank on the engines, but it will also get you a lot of traffic (following links is the second most popular way people find new sites).

Furthermore, on Excite, HotBot, and Lycos, link popularity also determines whether the engine will crawl deep into your site and index more pages or not. Do not ignore no matter how hard it sounds!

Submit to link popularity-based engines(Like Google)LAST after you have had a chance to build your inbound and outbound links up.

Examine your internal link structure carefully. Even for large Web sites, to the extent that it is possible, you want every Web page linking to every other page. Link every page of your site ( mainly the index page) with each other.

Build links. Go to Google.com .

Search for your key phrase.

Take the top 20 site urls

For each site again search for the links associated with that site. Just type in the search box : link: www.websitename.com

You will get hundreds of sites that your competitor are linked to.

Go to each of them and send an email to the corresponding webmaster requesting link. You will be amazed to find that how interested they are to link your site.

Try to build at least 60-100 links

Submit your pages to directories.

Submit small comments and articles bearing your url to various ezines. Most of the times they have html archive and search engines enlist them Sign every guest book you come across, be sure to include your URL linking back to your site.

Offer sincere testimonials to sites you enjoy or benefit from. Give permission to post your testimonial with the stipulation that a link back to your own site be posted with your testimonial.

Post your answers to questions in every discussion forum you can find. Take the time to find a topic you can advise on, and your site will be linked back to you for a long time. Don't give bad advice, just to perpetuate a link back, or your post may be wiped out by the moderator.

Submit to FFA Classifieds and directories once a week. Although FFA's are not currently indexed by many engines, some classified sites and directories may be. However you will be rotated out often so once a week, is a good bet to increase link popularity.

Post your Classified ads in AOL classifieds and YAHOO classifieds once per week. AOL classifieds also get posted in Netscape and Earthlink. Submit your site to as many search engines as possible. While you may not get the front page placement right away, you will have a link back to you from them all.

Upgrade your site to an info hub by offering prime outgoing links - such as a search engine portal. This will help boost your site's ranking with the search engines. Contrary to popular opinion, linkage counts both ways, incoming and outgoing. Check out this free distributed search engine portal: http://searchenginebase.com/. The signup page is here: http://searchenginebase.com/sbfreeportal0.html.

Link to lots of useful sites not directly competing with yours. Request reciprocal links. Create more domains and interlink them all. Avoid mere link farms - there's a ongoing witchhunt targeting those currently. Also, check your linkage regularly.

The first trap to avoid is joining a "link farm". This type of program will encourage you to add several pages to your website, linking to them from your front page, that are just links of other web sites. You instantly have pages upon pages of other web sites that link to you, as you link to them and can be a great way to increase your Google Page Rank, since one of the measurements in the Page Rank system is how many incoming links there are to your web site. But the guys at Google have discovered this trick and made adjustments that can penalize and even blacklist your website for being a link farm participant.
